What to do in the first 24 hours after water damage

A practical first-response checklist for active leaks, overflows, and interior flooding.

Water damage mitigation work

The first day after water damage is about controlling loss, not making perfect decisions. Start by stopping the source if it is safe to do so, protecting unaffected belongings, and documenting conditions before cleanup changes the scene.

Priorities first

Standing water, wet drywall, soaked flooring, and trapped humidity can all create bigger problems if the site sits too long. The first useful questions are simple:

  • Is the source still active?
  • Which rooms are affected?
  • Are materials staying wet with no airflow or drying plan?

What should wait

Do not jump straight to cosmetic repairs. Drying, containment, and accurate assessment should happen before replacement decisions. The goal is to reduce secondary damage and keep the recovery path organized.

When to call for help

If the damage is spreading, involves multiple rooms, or has moved into walls, ceilings, or cabinetry, a disciplined mitigation response usually matters more than a general cleanup effort.
